Who we are and how to contact us
ATAN is a legally constituted non-profit ecological organisation. It is governed by its own statutes and is financially and politically independent.
ATAN was founded in 1972 and was one of the first associations of its kind in the Canary Islands.
Its general mission is to protect the environment, and more specifically to: (1) protect the natural and cultural heritage of the Canary Islands; (2) foster sustainable use of the islands' resources, and (3) maintain and enhance the islanders quality of life.
To these ends, ATAN carries out a wide range of activities, including: registering formal complaints; organising protests; conducting research, and special studies; and holding public awareness campaigns, and cultural and leisure events (lectures, film and slide showings, photographic competitions, excursions, etc.).
Our association is organised in sections, each of which carries out different activities. Open meetings are held at 20.30 every Tuesday at our offices in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. In addition, each section periodically holds its own special meetings.
Today's modern world is dominated by relentless consumerism, with a rush to make profits now - regardless of the dire consequences for the future. That is why we need to raise our voices to stop scarce resources being mindlessly squandered. Rational use must take the place of pillage.
Ecological groups try to protect natural resources against ruthless exploitation and ensure that our children (and generations as yet unborn) can enjoy the same natural environment that we do today.
